On May 3, 2011, the Justice Department sent a letter to NCAA President Mark Emmert requesting information pertaining to a playoff for the football teams competing in the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision ("FBS").  Specifically, Assistant Attorney General Varney requested information relating to the following: 1) Why does FBS not have a playoff?; 2) What steps has the NCAA taken to create a playoff?; and 3) Has Emmert determined that aspects of the BCS do not serve fans, colleges, universities, and players?
